A story of success in the field of genetics, R-series algae meets the demand for cheap, over-the-counter drugs just as much as it provides medicines for intense treatment and surgery. Though not as potent as factory-made nanomeds, algae requires just two things -- a place to grow and a botanist. Nothing if not convenient, the R-series has found a new purpose. Although it might seem silly to put a hydroponics bay into a streamlined warship perfected down to the gram, R-series algae are a readily available source of medicinal chemicals even when a ship is cut off from supplies. This represents one of many steps in granting State vessels more autonomy and longer operation times. Some vessels are even receiving refits to harvest and convert trace gasses in space to use for water and nutrients, though some scientists disagree with the practice as being overly redundant.
