While the human population is 150 billion in the Akkalah star system, the total sophont population is actually 200 billion. These extra 50 billion individuals are composed of various exotic forms of life that have been created as a side effect of advancement in technology and societal workings. The most common of these life forms are artificially intelligent sophonts, created during the technological singularity 200 years ago. They exist in a multitude of fashions, ranging from stationary computer servers, to free roaming androids, and to completely vessel-less forms roaming the Net. But the most common occurrence of AI is in the form of both free roaming types. Similar to most cyborgs and majority of humans, AI have uploaded large portions of their consciousness onto the Net giving them a much greater degree of mobility thanks to the functionality of the Net.
The Net is the network of communication arrays spanning the entirety of the Akkalah star system. It is a major hub for transportation, communication, augmented reality, entertainment, and much more. 76% of the population of Akkalah has uploaded at least a portion of their mind onto the net in order to expand their vitality and senses, as such many people are capable of existing in many places at once. The Net also facilitates virtual immortality for its users via the use of blackboxes usually implanted in the cranium of baseline users or built-in to the systems of non-organics and cyborgs. Alternatively individuals can completely upload their minds onto the net, however this practice is heavily regulated in order to not overload the system. In total the Net houses approximately 29% of the population entirely within its labyrinthine data banks sprawling throughout the system, with the remaining 47% of the Net population being only partially uploaded.
While the Net does house a very sizable of the Akkalah population, planet Brumas is the next most populous region in Akkalah. The total population of Akkalah is approximately 20 billion individuals, including free roaming artificial intelligence and other exotic individuals. Brumas boasts dozens of megalopolises strewn about the planets surface, housing millions or billions of people within them. These cities are the backbone of production, containing completely automated factories and shipping systems in addition to vertical farming units towering beautifully over the skyline. Very few people live out in the various smaller towns, and mostly act as a local maintenance force for the mines and other resource harvesting systems of the automated industry.
While much of the population does exist either on the Net or on Brumas, the remaining populations live out in the colonies of Brumas on O'Neill cylinders, Bishop rings, rotating stations, as well as floating cities in the clouds of gas giants, or ground-based colonies on neighboring terrestrial worlds or moons. These colonies are spread throughout the entire star system, from Kinaroh to Quahta, and are largely self-sufficient as they farm water and minerals from asteroids and farm their own food. But many of them rely on power to be beamed to them from the solar power stations closer to the star.
