O'Neil Cylinders
In the aftermath of the technological singularity, humanities population had begun to grow at a significantly accelerated rate as a result of suddenly vastly superior medical care and more plentiful resources. The colonies of the Akkalah system could not grow fast enough to accommodate all of these people, and Brumas was already overburdened with overpopulation. Eventually the plan to create gargantuan rotating habitats that could house a quarter billion people each was proposed to the AUS, and accepted.
The cylinders were designed to be completely self sufficient and then some, the excess of their production would be shipped to the colonies in order to promote the terraformation efforts on the moons of Yomo and Mena, each of which had a moon with Brumas-like gravity. In order to achieve artificial gravity on the cylinders, they had to be rotated at relatively fast speeds. Day night cycles were achieved by simply covering or uncovering the edges of the cylinders. As per the standard method "vertical" farming facilities produce all food aboard the cylinders.
Half a decade was spent simply acquiring the resources needed to undertake such a colossal effort, and another half decade to build the first cylinder. In total 13 original cylinders were constructed in orbit around Brumas, housing 250,000,000 each. The early cylinders did not have a meaningful method of travel, and as such remain in orbit above Brumas to this day and have been greatly expanded to now house a billion each. Later incarnations were equipped with the most advanced engines that modern rocketry could offer, and were shot into orbit around the various colonies.
Other Habitats
Various other forms of space habitats are employed by the AUS including rotating wheel stations, and terrestrial colonies on moons and other planets.
