Brumas is the site of colossal, kilometers-high trees stretching far above any normal canopy. These trees, known as Tetrameles metallum, can be found all across the planet; some tower above jungles, some stand isolated in the middle of tundras. Although many like to believe that these trees are a natural occurrence, they are only partially correct. Tetrameles metallum is based off existing flora, but extensive genetic modification has gone into developing these phytominers. These giants were seeded some decades ago over choice mineral deposits. Their roots grow deep beneath the surface, consuming minerals like copper and gold before bringing them further up into the tree. Phytomining bacteria proceed to process the consumed minerals, afterwards gathering the valuable loads into leachates. The tree, sensing a buildup of leachates inside itself, funnels them out and secretes them as sap which can then be harvested. Phytomining is an eco-friendly and hands-off solution to mining. These trees develop bioluminescent fruits to attract avians at night, who make their nests in the tree and defend it against insects that want to harm it or eat from its sap. They also return a great deal of nutrients back into the soil, hence why life tends to flourish around them when placed into a habitable biome.
