NAME
Spermophaenidae horridus, commonly known as Dracons (pronounced 'dray-kuhn').
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Dracons tend to grow from seven to ten feet long. They can be anywhere from three to five feet high.
The weight of an adult varies from one hundred and sixty to six hundred pounds, surprisingly light for a creature of its size.
Dracons hold wings on their back that allow short bursts of flight. This -- combined with their hooked limbs, meager weight, and exceptional balance -- makes them into excellent climbers.
A Dracon's raptorial limbs contain a powerful hemolytic and necrotic venom, produced in small quantities and delivered by a fairly thin duct. Despite this, a single injection is enough to kill a human in under a minute.
Their mouths are designed to stretch and allow them to devour prey whole. Despite this, they are usually observed severing limbs before feeding.
HABITAT
Dracons live on Brumas. They make a living in areas with low moisture and sparse vegetation. This can include anything from snow-topped mountains to dried swamps. Warm-blooded and well-insulated, they are resilient to both heat and cold.
DIET
Dracons are strictly carnivores. They intake an average of 18,000 calories per day.
COMMUNICATION
Dracons have no capacity for speech, their vocal cords replaced with inner teeth used to shred devoured prey.
REPRODUCTION
Dracons are hermaphroditic. They regularly bury sacs containing viable gametes for other Dracon to find, at which point the scavenger inseminates itself. Dracons can self-fertilize if necessary, but the resulting spawn will not be biologically viable.
Infants gestate for seven months. They are kept inside the parent Dracon, which holds anywhere from two to six children inside of itself. The parent uses their bodies to decentralize its own nervous system, allowing it to continue on if its brain is destroyed. A crippled Dracon will release its children once it reaches a safe place; the children proceed to cannibalize their parent before venturing off into the wilderness.
The average Dracon lives for 28 years.
BEHAVIOR
Dracons are exceptionally aggressive creatures and are known to kill for sport. They are easily stressed in social situations and will engage in cannibalism upon seeing other members of their species.
